About

I’m Steve Alcalde, a librarian, technology educator, and speaker with a background in both libraries and the classroom. I currently lead Computers & Technology Services at Rogers Memorial Library in Southampton, New York, where my work focuses on technology services, digital literacy, emerging technologies, staff development, and helping people feel more confident using technology.

Before becoming a librarian, I spent several years as a secondary education teacher. That experience continues to shape how I approach technology today: not simply as a collection of tools to learn, but as something that should be taught with patience, clarity, and an understanding that everyone comes to it with a different level of experience and confidence.

Libraries, Technology & Learning

My work sits at the intersection of libraries, technology, and education. I’ve helped develop and expand services ranging from makerspaces and emerging technologies to public computing, digital tools, and technology instruction. Just as importantly, I work with library staff to build the skills and confidence needed to support those services and help patrons navigate an increasingly complicated digital world.

That work has also taken me beyond the library. I’ve presented at local, state, and national conferences and developed webinars and professional training on technology instruction, AI, digital literacy, staff technology confidence, and other issues affecting libraries.

Professional Involvement

Beyond my work at the library, I’m actively involved in the broader library profession. I’ve held leadership roles with the Suffolk County Library Association (SCLA) and its Computer and Technical Services (CATS) division, and I co-founded the East End Tech Coalition (EETC), which brings library technology professionals together to share ideas, solve problems, and learn from one another. I also serve on professional committees focused on technology, professional development, and collaboration, which keeps me connected with colleagues across the field and helps shape the topics I write, teach, and speak about.

Beyond Technology

Technology is a major focus of my work, but it isn’t the only one. My interests also extend to intellectual freedom, censorship, and the challenges libraries face when materials and ideas are contested. Through panels and presentations, I’ve explored how library professionals can respond to book challenges, advocate for intellectual freedom, and support the freedom to read.

Steve Talks About… is a place for me to explore the issues shaping libraries and the people who work in and use them, whether that means emerging technology, AI, digital literacy, intellectual freedom, or whatever comes next.
